Those attitudes are sadly common here in the UK too. The expectations of teachers and parents are so key to a child’s confidence and self-image. There is a filtering effect; if teachers espouse fixed beliefs towards mathematical ability, it is natural for students to do the same. It’s why any system-level intervention must engage the trifecta of students, teachers and parents.
