Thanks, Mattias — I totally agree that mathematics is not unique in what it offers to students. It was my own proxy but there are several others. But mathematics does enjoy special attention with policymakers whose misdirected efforts reduce the subject to mundane knowledge acquisition, void of the benefits I listed. My main fear for Computer Science is that it will be similarly constrained by the shackles of mainstream education.
