Thanks, Howard for the interesting references. I agree that assessment should not be abandoned (baby and bathwater come to mind). As a feedback tool for students and teachers, assessment is vital. It is high-stakes testing that privileges the absorption of meaningless facts that needs to be challenged.
Education does not yet have a satisfactory way of assessing deeper cognitive skills like problem solving and reasoning, but that is no reason to discard them from our curricula.
