I can offer a partial response based on a research project I was involved with.
iTalk2Learn looked at next generaiton intelligent tutoring, one aspect of which was detecting and responding to students’ emotions through speech interaction. Empathy was very much the goal, though it remains an unnerving prospect to me that it would manifest through a digital interface. A more laudable goal would be to leverage technology (AI or otherwise) to make human instruction more empathetic (e.g. helping teachers identify students’ individual learning needs so they can move away from one-size-fits-all instruction).
