All very reasonable but surely we can avoid a trade-off altogether by never fixating on any one representation. I’ve chosen a few that I think will elucidate the rich structures of multiplication but recognise that no single representation will ever suit all students. So we offer multiple representations to give students as many entry points to understanding.
