Agreed — math pedagogy has a long way to go! High-stakes testing is a toxin that needs to be resisted with all our might. But when used as a low-stakes mechanism for feedback and support, testing can be very useful. And in any case, no math curriculum is complete without rich, open problems that build on foundational knowledge.
